An eZine Update from DeltaRail

A warm welcome to DeltaRail's first eZine newsletter.

From time to time we would like to eMail to you information about our company, customers, products and staff. We hope that you will find it interesting.

These are demanding times for the Railway Industry worldwide. In the UK Sir Roy McNulty's review of value for money in the rail industry has put the spotlight on the "4Cs" of increased Capacity and Customer Satisfaction, and reduced Carbon and Cost.

In 2008 we declared our company's  mission:

To  encapsulate rail know-how into value-adding Software, Technology and Services for our customers.

We therefore feel uniquely well qualified to respond with solutions to Sir Roy McNulty's findings.

Signalling Control Successes at Reading and North London Line

DeltaRail has a track record of delivering complex signalling solutions that optimise the available capacity of the railway.

Major installations have now been undertaken at Reading and on the North London Line. New Integrated Electronic Control Centre (IECC) systems were installed over the Christmas period at Network Rail's Thames Valley and Upminster signalling centres.

The new IECC control system for Reading comprises four workstations with Automatic Route-Setting (ARS) functionality to optimise train movements in and around the area. The Reading Enabling Project was handed back for use on 30th December.

Two new IECC workstations with ARS were installed at Upminster. These are additional to the three existing IECC workstations that control the route from London to Tilbury and Southend. The North London Line passes through the inner suburbs of North London, crossing many important routes, and making the IECC installations particularly complicated.

The work was part of the £326 million upgrade of the London Overground network. When this work is complete passengers will see longer trains, more frequent services and will benefit from reliable connections to the main 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games Park at Stratford.

A further 3 IECC workstations have been ordered to extend the length of the Great Western main line controlled from Thames Valley Signalling Centre to include the Paddington to Heathrow section.

Since DeltaRail was created in 2006 our signalling control business turnover has grown by 70% and we have a strong order book extending well beyond 2011. We have significantly expanded our team of IRSE-licensed Functional Testers, Principal Testers and Testers in-charge to meet this new demand.

DeltaRail is currently investing in the next generation signalling control system "IECC Scalable" which will be available in 2011.

Who's Who at DeltaRail?

Adrian Golby - International Sales Director

A relative newcomer to the rail sector, Adrian has a degree in Engineering from the University of Cambridge, and all round experience at a senior level in the global automated capital goods sectors. This has included Technical, Operations and General Management, but in all of these roles he has always been close to the customer in understanding their operational and commercial needs. Over the last few years this led to an increasing focus on Sales and Business Development.

It was this focus on understanding customer needs and the opportunity to grow business in an exciting new sector that led Adrian to DeltaRail. Adrian comments that:

"I was immediately impressed with DeltaRail's products such as TracklineTwo (On-Train Track Geometry Measurement) and VIEW (Trackside Vehicle Condition Monitoring).

New technologies are delivering significant opportunities to help our customers around the globe to realise benefits in utilisation, reduced costs and improved safety. This is a message that has universal appeal and makes it an exciting time to be operating in the rail sector"

IMechE Young Engineers Annual Railway Seminar

DeltaRail is delighted to be sponsoring this important seminar, organised by the Young Engineers branch of the iMechE for the fifth year.

The seminar, "Tracks to Success: Delivering in Demanding Times", will take place in Nottingham, UK, 21-23 November.

Brief details of the seminar (pdf format) can be found here.

VAMPIRE® UK User Day

Following the success of this year's event we are now planning the next VAMPIRE® User Day which will be held in Derby, UK, on Monday 31st October 2011.

This is an opportunity to meet the VAMPIRE® railway dynamics simulation team, share your experiences and learn with other VAMPIRE® users.

The programme will cover the latest software developments, future plans, modelling techniques, and presentations by users on recent VAMPIRE® applications.

News..

Metro-North Success with Wheel Impact Load Detection System

MNR have reported success with their Wheel Impact Load Detection (WILD) system which is based on DeltaRail's WheelChex technology.

The system operates on all four tracks of their Park Avenue Tunnel where the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines converge on the way into the Grand Central Terminal.

In MNR's "On Track" magazine Chief Mechanical Officer John Kesich says that "because this wheel detection method lengthens the lifespan of our 4,200 wheel sets (8,400 wheels) we plan to reduce wheel maintenance costs in the future. There are no additional labor costs associated with this system, but there are exceptional advantages."

Amtrak Uses VAMPIRE® to Investigate Vehicle Design

Amtrak have acquired new VAMPIRE® licences to evaluate the performance of various suspension components on ride quality, including dampers.

VAMPIRE® allows vehicle performance to be assessed on realistic track geometry data, including that obtained by using track geometry measurement systems.

XVPlus Development
Continues

XV is DeltaRail's highly successful depot management software which has more than 2000 users in over 150 train and bus maintenance locations across the UK and Europe.

Customers are upgrading to XVPlus, the new version of the software, which offers an improved software architecture and a new diagramming module. Future developments include a serialised parts tracking and component capability.

Users to upgrade the software include Siemens Northern Spirit, Sheffield Supertram, Arriva Trains Wales and Siemens Heathrow Express.

Rail Engineer Magazine Features VIEW Product

DeltaRail's depot-based remote train condition monitoring product VIEW is described in the December issue of Rail Engineer (pages 48 and 49):

Rail Engineer

VIEW automatically monitors (using lasers and cameras) wheel profile, brake pads and current collector shoes to assist in the management of individual vehicles and whole fleets.
